Date: Feb. 27, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Norma J. Torres (CA-35) today voted with House Democrats to pass the American Rescue Plan Act, legislation proposed by President Biden to deliver significant COVID relief for struggling Americans.

The package, which passed by a vote of 219 to 212 provides a myriad of supports for workers and businesses, as well as overstretched local and state governments. Its provisions include, in part:

$ 1,400 direct impact payments for workers and dependents, bringing the total federal support provided since December up to $ 2,000 per person.
$ 68 billion for vaccine programs, testing, contact tracing, and hiring 100,000 full time public health workers to support our COVID-19 response.
$ 40 billion for emergency rental assistance, homeowner support and homelessness programs.
$ 350 billion to keep first responders, frontline health workers, and other providers of vital services safely on the job.
$ 130 billion to help schools meet CDC recommendations to safely allow students and teachers to return to the classroom.
The legislation now goes to the US Senate. Lawmakers in both chambers are working to ensure final legislation reaches President Biden for a signature no later than March 14th.

Congresswoman Torres released the following statement:

"Congress delivered a down payment of COVID relief in December, and today we passed a package that would make it whole," Rep. Torres said. "The American Rescue Plan fulfills President Biden's commitment to provide $ 2,000 to every struggling American, and delivers urgently-needed resources to distribute vaccines, keep our first responders on the job, and reopen our schools safely. This is exactly the kind of investment that can help Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties continue their decline in case rates, and allow us to finally emerge from the most restrictive COVID tiers in California. "

To date, Congresswoman Torres has secured more than $ 517 million in federal COVID relief for the Inland Empire.
